Osceola County began participating in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) in the year 1982 with the first effective Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) flood map in place. The main objective of the program is to protect citizens life and health; to control the alteration of natural floodplains; and to insure that potential home buyers are notified if a property is located in a flood hazard area.
Flood Insurance Rate Maps FIRMs cannot reflect every variation in the physical geography of an area. Therefore, a FIRM occasionally will show a property as being in a Special Flood Hazard Area SFHA, even though the building may be above the Base Flood Elevation BFE.
